As part of a larger and on-going investigation that I am conducting into the so called "halal meat industry" I made a Freedom Of Information request to the UK governments Food Standard Agency (FSA).

The Food Standards Agency is responsible for food safety and food hygiene across the UK. They work with local authorities to enforce food safety regulations and have staff who work in UK meat plants to check that the requirements of the regulations are being met.

They also commission research related to food safety and are directly involved in the Halal meat scandal we currently face in the UK.

Below is a screen grab from part of their reply...

I asked:
7a. Do you as an agency recognise as an official approved body or organisation who's advice or opinions, written - spoken or published, hold any gravitas, sway or authority, or are you aware of, any of the following:  Halal Food Authority - http://halalfoodauthority.com/ Halal ANSA (Association of Non Stun Abattoirs) - http://www.ansauk.co.uk/

7b. Are you aware of any other Pro Halal or religious Slaughter organisation who does hold any of the any gravitas from whom you as an agency may seek advice from and presumably consider or act on said advice?

Their reply was:
The Secretary of State for Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in England, the Scottish Ministers, and the Welsh Ministers are the competent authorities for implementing domestic and European animal health and animal welfare legislation. The FSA does not hold responsibility for recognising such organisations.

So there we have the definitive answer:

None of the "self styled" halal certification bodies which seem to be springing up everywhere are formally (or informally) recognised in any way by the Foods Standards Agency and presumably the government on who's behalf the FSA exists.

Please take a few moments to sign this petition to ALL of the UK's political parties demanding that a yes / no vote is held so that we, the general public, can decide whether to ban non-stun slaughter once and for all.
